Donations and the Voluntary Action Center
The Voluntary Action Center (VAC) appreciates your donations, which are vital to the function of this organization.  Below you will find information regarding how to donate, how to receive a tax deduction, and items the VAC needs.

How do I donate?

All donated items are accepted Monday-Saturday in the donation area, accessible from Park Street.  Please place donated items inside our building, in the designated donation area.  Tax receipts may be obtained in the Thrift Store.

What items can I donate?

The VAC accepts donated items for the Food Pantry, Community Kitchen, and Thrift Store.  We accept items for our Food Pantry, Community Kitchen, and Thrift Store.  Accepted items change from time to time, but any changes will be updated on our website.

Are my donations tax deductible?

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) allows tax payers to deduct the "fair market value" of in-kind donations, which are in "good used condition or better" to qualified charitable organizations.  Because the VAC is a registered 501 (c)(3) Non-Profit Organization, which is registered as Hand-Up, Inc. DBA Voluntary Action Center, we are able to provide a tax deduction for the donation of clean, gently used clothing and household items.  We are also able to provide tax receipts for items donated to the Food Pantry and Community Kitchen.

The IRS prohibits the VAC from providing a dollar amount for your donation.  It's the responsibility of the donor to determine the "fair market value" of donated items which is based on industry re-sale values.  The VAC has provided an average Thrift Store sales price guide (see right) to help in determining the "fair market value" of donated goods.

You should take into consideration the wear and quality of donated items when utilizing the price guide.  If you have items which would be outside the listed price ranges it's recommended that you consult a tax adviser.  For more information you may visit the IRS website at

When Donating Please Remember
  • Review our list of unacceptable donations before making making a drop off.

  • If you're unsure, please inquire before donating.

  • We are unable to provide pick-up services at this time.

  • Some items are simply too heavy or bulky for staff or volunteers to handle.  If you cannot manage the donation with one or two individuals then please inquire first.

  • Some items will not sell in our store and we eventually need to dispose of these items.

  • If an item has been recalled we cannot accept due to safety concerns.

  • Hazardous materials which may potentially create danger for others should not be donated.
